A few more words about this module

The marae is the focal point of Māori communities throughout Aotearoa. It is a place to stand and belong and is the heart of Māori culture.  
Marae are used for meetings, celebrations, funerals, educational workshops and other important indigenous events, and today the pōwhiri process is common in the work place and amongst organisations.
Throughout this course you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of marae etiquette, kawa and tikanga.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the pōwhiri process, including karanga, whaikōrero, waiata, hongi and kai.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate terminology associated with marae and pōwhiri concepts.
